Laura’s Book Nook- 45 Pounds (More or Less)

45 Pounds (More or Less) is a realistic and difficult portrayal of a teenager named Ann dealing with body image, humiliation (both real and in her head), and the simple pains of growing up. She’s 16 years old and a size 17, and with her aunt’s wedding looming over her shoulder and that bridesmaid dress that she just wants to look perfect in, she decides that she must lose 45 pounds (more or less) in two months.

The author, K. A. Barson, paints an authentic picture of Ann’s life, both painful and compelling, that’s almost difficult to read at times because you feel the pain right alongside her. And at the end, you’ve found a true friend in Ann Galardi. Everyone can relate to her seeing herself as “less than perfect,” and on that subject, she sure has a lot to say.

Even though this story isn’t exactly “New and NEVER seen before!” material, I would still suggest this book to anyone struggling with their weight or body image, or just anyone looking for a good summer read. Barson’s real-to-life writing combines a lighthearted nature with serious emotional issues, focusing on Ann’s struggles to escape unhealthy relationships with both people and food, figure out what’s real in her life, and maybe even meet a guy with extremely cute dimples before the end.

This book leaves you a little happier than when you started. Romantic, funny and lighthearted, nothing you haven’t read before, but still worth the read, I would give 45 Pounds (More or Less) a 3.5 out of 5 rating.
