Canton Football Update
Canton Chiefs Varsity Football won against the Northville Mustangs to take the title of the KLAA Kensington Conference Champions, and then come back for more the following week to beat the Mustangs for the second time in the first round of playoffs.
The Chiefs knew winning the first game would be tough, and many people predicted they were not going to be able to come back and beat the same team twice in a row; those people would be wrong. The boys slaughtered Northville with a wowing score of 55-29, making many key plays throughout the game.
Coach Tim Baechler said, “To have to beat these guys a second week in a row, very difficult to do. Our kids are very tough physically and mentally to come out and do that.” The boys showed their determination to come out on top, by making the adjustments necessary to defend what they brought.
“We ran a couple formations that we did on offense that they couldn’t stop in the second half, and that just blew the game open for us,” said Baechler.
Defensively, Lou Baechler, junior linebacker, had a stellar game, along with junior Noah Brown, senior Reid McDonnell and junior Colin Troup.
Coach Baechler said the entire offensive line played great, including senior Marcus Sanders, senior Julian Thorton, and specifically senior Reid McDonnell, who personally had four touchdowns, scoring approximately half of the Chiefs overall points for the night.
Senior Captain and quarterback, Jake O’Donnell, said that winning the first round of playoffs feels amazing, but it was the whole experience of getting to the playoffs that was all worth the while.
O’Donnell said, “We always come out hard and fast, to take care of business and play as brothers.”
Despite the outstanding back to back win, the Chiefs season came to an unfortunate end with a loss against the Saline Hornets. While the season is over, memories that will last a lifetime were made.
Senior Michael Maes said, “This season was great; it was a great way to cap off the 4 year run for our senior class. I’m really proud of how we did. Even though we didn’t go as far as we did last year, I think we accomplished a lot this year.”
