Health: Quinoa (keen-wah)
Although it sounds like a karate move, quinoa will do nothing besides knock your digestive system right on track (excuse the corny pun). Although the grain originated in the Inca Empire long before my time, quinoa is sold all over the U.S. in grocery stores and markets.
Authority Nutrition tells us that in just one cup of quinoa, there is eight grams of protein, five grams of fiber and it is 15 percent iron, granting it as a healthy meat alternative for vegetarians or vegans. There is no need to fret if you have celiac disease or live a gluten free lifestyle; quinoa is one of the few grains that is completely gluten free.
Have high blood sugar? Trying to avoid it all cost? No worries, the glycemic index in quinoa is only 53, which is extremely low.
Serve it over a nice portion of steamed peppers, or even mix it with some fresh blueberries; coming in three different forms, white, red and black, quinoa can be paired with almost any food.
This grain is sure to leave you satisfied and filled with nutrition.
