P-CEP is going all in(clusive) for ‘Spread the Word’ month
The Human Services Exploration (HSE) classes are helping P-CEP to “pledge to include” this March for “Spread the Word,” a campaign focused on “creating a new reality: inclusion for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
First founded in 2009 and originally known as “Spread the Word to End the Word,” the campaign’s original focus aimed to end the use of the ‘r-word.’ In 2019 the campaign’s name was changed to “Spread the Word,” with a larger focus on inclusivity.
“[HSE] has done various things to spread inclusion and kindness around the school,” said Kennedy Isreal, Salem senior and HSE Art leadership student.
To raise money for the campaign, volunteers from the HSE classes rolled a cart in the hallways of Salem during Advisory on March 17 and sold doughnuts for $2.00 each piece. According to HSE staff and leadership, doughnuts will be sold again in Salem during Advisory on Thursday, March 22.
Additionally, student volunteers also helped at the “Togetherness Table” in the Salem Cafeteria on March 7, and the Plymouth Cafeteria on March 8. At this table, all students could play games during all three lunches. “Spread the Word” shirts were available for purchase.
All profits from the doughnuts and T-shirts for the “Spread the Word” campaign will go to Special Olympics.
“Bringing the ‘Spread the Word’ campaign to P-CEP is just one of the ways we can break down barriers,” said Isreal. “I love that this pledge is inclusive and everyone can be a part of it.”
