Early dismissal and snow day save students from stress

Students were overjoyed to hear that school would be dismissed at noon on Dec. 13 due to harsh weather that was forecasted to arrive around 3 p.m. The next day, on Dec. 14, P-CCS also called off school for a snow day.

Snow days and early dismissals are pretty rare occurrences at Plymouth-Canton Educational Park due to the frigid conditions and heavy amounts of snow necessary to receive them, so students and teachers were surprised to hear that both would occur back-to-back.

“I’m actually really glad they decided to end school early,” said Salem senior Javier Garza. “It’s a nightmare getting out of the parking lots as it is, so I can only imagine what it’d be like during a snowstorm. A lot of kids probably would’ve gotten into car accidents.”

Poor driving conditions weren’t the only thing that students avoided. Plymouth junior Evie Leach said that she had a lot of homework due that afternoon and that the dismissal saved her the stress of having to rush to get it done at lunch in order to turn it in on time.

The snow day also added to students’ excitement.

“Getting a snow day was the best gift I’ve ever gotten,” Canton senior Vivian Clements said. “I had a ton of homework on the night of the early dismissal, so it was nice that I could put it away and relax after I heard there was going to be a snow day on my birthday.”

Though the students were ecstatic about having no school, most were actually surprised P-CEP allowed a snow day.

“My friends and I all assumed that there would be school because P-CEP hardly ever gives out snow days, even in horrible conditions that get schools called off in other districts,” Leach said. “Hopefully P-CEP is starting to realize how dangerous the snow can be, especially for us since we have to walk through slush and ice on the path and drive through horrible traffic with 6,000 other students after school every day.”
