Over 150 students in the Canton cafeteria participated in the first ever BLAST Euchre Tournament on Nov. 17. It was an Independent Service Project run and organized by Canton senior Alexis Boron, Canton senior Caitlyn Marsac and Canton senior Erica Palise.

BLAST is a local non-profit company that raises funds for children with cancer. Boron said that a majority of the funds raised will be allotted to the C.S. Mott children’s hospital at U of M. Boron said the event had raised around $750.

Each student that attended paid a fee of $5 at the door and an additional $1 for each individual slice of pizza.

Boron felt the tournament was extremely successful. “We had a great turnout, and the overall layout was fairly organized,” said Boron. “We also had a time slot allotted to teaching people how to play euchre if they were beginners, which means that people would not be excluded from the fun for not knowing how to play.”

Boron came up with this idea one day at lunch while playing a game of euchre with her friends.

“After talking to a bunch of our classmates we realized that euchre was actually a really popular card game,” Boron said.

Although the turnout was great, Boron said she did face some difficulties while organizing this ISP.

“I wish that we would have had more time to advertise, since many people did not know about the event until the day of and it made things very difficult to plan because we had so many people register at the last minute,” said Boron.

Experienced euchre players seemed to really enjoy the experience as well.

Plymouth senior Tushar Jayaram said, “Euchre was kinda insane because my partner and I continued to expose our lesser opponents.” He was not a fan that games were only scored up to five points rather than ten, but he said the free pizza made up for it.

Euchre “rookies” also had fun. Plymouth senior Sarah Dottavio said, “A lot of people came out to support the cause. I didn’t do great, but I still had fun playing.”
