2019 Met Gala Looks

The Met Gala is filled with the most outrageous, beautiful, creative, and downright hideous outfits. Each May, the world’s celebrities meet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to raise money for the Costume Institute. The Costume Institute gets a new theme every year, which guests center their outfits around. This year’s theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” as in fashion that is so over the top and ridiculous it somehow manages to be attractive. Most celebrities succeeded in wearing the ridiculous, but some missed out on the attractive part.

Actress Hailee Steinfeld wore a purple and green, ruffled dress with a ball gown style skirt to this year’s gala. To add an element of shock, large letters on the front of the dress read “No Photos Please.” Steinfeld’s outfit felt overly tacky and lacked the bit of beauty that would make it truly camp. Steinfeld wasn’t the only celebrity to fall short of camp. Actress Chloë Grace Moretz wore a black dress with an odd speckle-like pattern. It was something that could have been worn on any red carpet; it fell short of the Met Gala’s signature over-the-top style.

Some celebrities rocked this year’s theme with extravagant gowns and suits. Zendaya owned the ball in her Cinderella-inspired gown. Law Roach waved his magic wand and the dress lit up slowly from the bottom of the skirt all the way up to the top of the bodice. To add to the fairytale, Zendaya left a glass slipper on the stairs at midnight. As always, Zendaya looked absolutely magical.

Actor Ezra Miller sported mesmerizing makeup done by Mimi Choi. Choi is famous for her ability to confuse the human eye with her illusion makeup. Choi gave Miller seven eyes, two real and five makeup, but it was nearly impossible to spot the difference. Miller carried around a mask made to look like his face and wore a suit with an incredible train and diamond corset. Actor Jared Leto also donned diamonds over his outfit, a deep red gown with a turtleneck and billowed shoulders. Leto carried a replica of his head, which looked identical to him right down to his divine wavy hair.

That’s just to name a few looks. Many others blew the theme out the water including Harry Styles with his black jumpsuit and high-heeled boots. Lady Gaga had a less subtle, but still beautiful, camp look. Her outfit was three looks in one, transforming from a large pink gown down to a skimpy black number. Serena Williams wore a gorgeous yellow masterpiece with huge shoulders and pink decals. Billy Porter was carried into the ball on an Egyptian Litter. Although the Met Gala was missing some favorite stars, like Blake Lively, Rihanna and Beyoncé, the ball was still a success.
